Candy Lee LaBalle

Since moving to Madrid full-time in 2003, Candy Lee LaBalle has picked olives in Andalucía, stomped grapes in La Rioja, danced in the streets during Carnival in Cádiz, white-water rafted in the Pyrenees, and ate pulpo (boiled octopus) in Galicia. Along the way, she found her creative spirit. She has contributed articles about Spain to several publications and is currently working on a documentary about the intercultural dating adventures between American women and Spanish men.

A sixth-generation New Orleanian, Candy did a stint in the army in West Germany, obtained a degree in cultural anthropology, became part of the underground arts scene of inner-city Detroit, and was a party planner in Boston. She arrived in Spain on a whim, looking for a few weeks of adventure and a taste of la vida española. Instead, she fell madly in love with the country.

During the research and writing of this book, Candy’s affection for Spain continued to grow. Whether screaming Ole! at a bullfight, lying on a deserted beach in Cabo de Gata, or just having a glass of vino at a bar in Madrid, she was constantly amazed by the simple beauties and vibrant passions of Spain. “I am still discovering new delights each day. It’s a fortuitous catch-22. My love for the country fuels my desire to know it better. And the more I know it, the deeper I love it. My Spanish friends tease me that I am more Spanish than they are. I consider it a compliment.”
